Having kids often means limiting the type of movies coming into your home. Out goes Goodfellas, in comes an animated musical. But just because you want to show your children some wholesome entertainment doesn’t mean you should have to suffer. Finding a common ground is key. With that in mind, here are some movies suitable for the whole family that are also entertaining for parents. You’ll thank me:
1. The Incredibles
Why It’s Good for Kids: It’s hard to pick just one movie from Pixar Animation Studios for this list, because their entire output has been fantastic ever since 2005′s Toy Story. But even within their own family of films, The Incredibles stands out for its energy, humor, and warmth. The family of superheroes at its center is a good role model for kids of a working family unit.
Why Adults Will Like It: The animation and concept design are stunning, and it’s one of the most fun action flicks of the past few years, animated or not. If you don’t smile, you might not have a heart.
2. Rudy
Why It’s Good for Kids: It’s a simple, clean story about a young boy who grows up to pursue and finally achieve his dream, even if it’s playing for just one minute with Notre Dame’s football team. Bullies are overcome, the geek gets the girl, and everybody comes together at the end.
Why Adults Will Like It: It’s one of the best sports movies of all time, period. Sean Astin is great as Rudy, you’ve got everyone from Ned Beatty to Jon Favreau in supporting roles, and the final game is guaranteed to make you cry.
3. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Why It’s Good for Kids: This is the all-time classic kids’ movie. Steven Spielberg even shot it low to the ground, at a kid’s eye level. The honest, loving story about a boy and his alien appeals to everyone, and will have kids riveted from E.T.’s discovery to his journey home.
Why Adults Will Like It: It’s one of Spielberg’s best, and it manages to evoke a bittersweet nostalgia for childhood even as it works toward a soaring ending. Basically, it reminds you what it was like to be a kid.
4. Star Wars: A New Hope
Why It’s Good for Kids: George Lucas’ classic space-adventure has chase scenes, robots, monsters, lightsabers, and good guys beating up bad guys. It was tailor-made for kids, and it still works today.
Why Adults Will Like It: Correction: It was tailor-made for kids of all ages. Sure, it can look a bit hokey at times — dig that 1977 hair — but it’s still a perfectly pitched adventure tale. And come on, you loved it as a kid, too.
5. The Muppet Movie
Why It’s Good for Kids: As sure as the sun rises in the east, kids love Muppets. Their first feature film is a great comedy with plenty of goofy moments, and it’s (obviously) free of risque situations.
Why Adults Will Like It: For a comedy with puppets, the movie is remarkably surreal and quick-witted. (It’s actually kind of a film within a film.) It’s also a reminder that, back in the day, the Muppets had their own thing going on and were great at it.
6. Mary Poppins
Why It’s Good for Kids: The songs alone make it a children’s classic. Generations of kids have grown up humming “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and watching Mary Poppins teach children to clean their rooms and look for magic all around them.
Why Adults Will Like It: It’s one of Disney’s better live-action comedies from the 1960s, and Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke are fantastic to watch.
7. Back to the Future
Why It’s Good for Kids: Marty McFly’s adventures in time travel are easy to understand and hilarious to boot, especially when he winds up spurning advances from his own mother. One of those rare comedies that holds up decades down the road.
Why Adults Will Like It: Between “Family Ties” and this movie, Michael J. Fox flat-out owned 1985, and it’s easy to see why. Back to the Future has a great script, wonderful jokes, and a truly inventive story that anyone can enjoy.
8. The Wizard of Oz
Why It’s Good for Kids: Has there ever been a better fable brought to life on screen? Earnest, sweet, and full of wonderful characters and a nice moral about cherishing your loved ones, The Wizard of Oz is tough to beat.
Why Adults Will Like It: It’s an American classic, pure and simple. The songs are fun, the characters are enjoyable, and the story is one for the ages.
9. Ghostbusters
Why It’s Good for Kids: It’s just supernatural enough to feel edgy, but not so much that it’s really scary. Plus it’s never too soon to start teaching your kids about Bill Murray. Slimer’s a fan favorite with younger viewers.
Why Adults Will Like It: Come on, it’s Ghostbusters. Endlessly quotable and consistently funny, it’s one of the best comedies of the past 30 years.
10. The Iron Giant
Why It’s Good for Kids: The Iron Giant is a moving story of a boy who befriends a giant robot in the late 1950s, giving the emotional lessons of friendship and tolerance a grounding in modern American history.
Why Adults Will Like It: It’s no surprise that it was directed by Brad Bird, who would go on to make great movies with Pixar (including The Incredibles). It’s a story about a kid but not one with a childish mentality, and the nuanced story resonates with adults, as well. It’s an ideal family film because it can truly be enjoyed by people of all ages.
